Quality IEP Development
October 18, 2018 | NWRESD, Room 316  |  8:30 am to 3:30 pm

This one-day quality Individualized Education Plan (IEP) development training is a collaborative project between ODE and NWRESD.  Presenters will be:

  • Laura Anderson, Autism Specialist
  • Margaret Brown, Special Education Coordinator
  • Ana Lia Oliva, Special Education Coordinator
  • Stacie Peeler, Autism Consultant
  • Meera S.T. Vargo, School Psychologist
  • Cathy Jensen, Director K-12 Special Education

      IEP Teamwork

Set the stage for collaborative and meaningful participation of all team members including parents, specialists, and general education team members.  This strand will cover preparing parents for the meeting, helping general education teachers understand their role, reviewing procedural safeguards in a meaningful way, developing a collaborative agenda, etc.

Goal Writing: Connecting the Dots from Present Levels to Goals to Services

Practice developing present levels that consider all areas of educational need, then connect those needs directly to goals and services.  Presenters will offer coaching around writing goals to support discipline, disability, placement, or age-level needs.

      Maximizing Accommodations and Modifications

This strand will cover strategies for determining the most effective accommodations and modifications, considering not only the individual student's learning profile but the needs of the student within the current learning environment.  We will also discuss strategies for engaging and training general education teachers as partners in the process.

      Decision-making and Prior Written Notice

Although most of the time team members are in agreement about decisions related to FAPE, when conflicts do occur, they often come up at times when a PWN is required: Evaluation Planning, Eligibility, Placement, etc.  This strand will review the technical aspects of Prior Written Notice while also exploring team-based decision-making and strategies to turn challenging conversations into opportunities for positive collaboration centered on student success.
