Understanding Behavior 2: Preventing Escalations & Maintaining Safety For All
NWRESD Columbia Service Center | 3/19/2019  | 8:00 am to 3:00 pm

This training is designed to build from the mindset and EBBS foundation discussed in Understanding Behavior 1 and expands participants’ understanding of behavioral escalations, in particular how to prevent damaging coercive patterns between children and adults from being formed.  Critical preventative and de-escalation techniques designed to maintain a safe environment for all adults and children will be detailed.

    Workshop Presenter

Lead Trainer: Dr. Ben Smith has over 20 years’ experience as a professor, federally funded researcher, behaviour specialist, classroom teacher, and consultant/trainer.  He has been recognized for his work related to better understanding coercive escalation cycles between adult and children and improving the functional behavioural assessment process.  He has worked with dozens of school districts from across the country to build durable and sustainable systems that promote professional’s use of true evidence-based proactive practices that build the emotional regulation skills of ALL children. His expertise has been sought out as guest reviewer in many professional journals (e.g., Behaviour Disorders, JPBI, Journal of Applied Behavior Analysis), and has been involved in several state-wide initiatives related to Positive Behaviour Interventions & Supports.  His emphasis on multi-tiered systems change and explicit teaching practices as part of comprehensive behaviour support programming has facilitated the integration of multiple initiatives that impact all professionals and all children within a building or district community.  His development of the 5-step Competing Schedule model of behavioural change has been used across the country to develop graduate programs of study, specialized programs for students with the most significant behaviour support needs, and helped countless professionals and parents understand how to ensure evidence-based practices are used in their daily interactions with children.
